sealord > Two Discodoris planata sea slugs in close proximity to one another in Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast on the 19 February 2007. The orange mass in the upper left corner of the image is a sponge. Dr. Bernard Picton in his excellent book "A Field Guide to the Nudibranchs of the British Isles" writes that the white patches on the mantle of this species are acid glands. These individuals were found in contact with each other under a boulder at low tide. There were transfered to the top of a stone for photography.

sealord > A single Discodoris planata nudibranch on top of a stone in Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast. The orange mass in the upper left corner is a sponge. This individual was touching another one which has moved away. The mantle skirt of the second animal can just be seen at the top of the smooth stone. The frilly projections on the top of the sea slug are the gills, which are partially retracted. A bryozoan colony forms a white round sheet covering the stone at the bottom of the photograph.
