sealord > This is a montage of images from Belle Greve Bay and the Queen Elizabeth II marina on Guernsey's east coast in the Channel Islands. The main photograph is of a tide pool in Belle Greve Bay. The old, discarded tire and the broken battery were photographed on the lower shore in Belle Greve Bay. They were exposed by a low tide. The two adult shanny (family blennidae) are native to Belle Greve Bay. The juvenile shanny was found in the QE II marina which opens onto the southern shore of Belle Greve Bay. sealord > Guernsey commercial fisherman Rick Ferbrache caught this red sea bream, Pagellus bogaraveo, off Pontinfer, north-east Guernsey, Channel Islands in the English Channel on 28 January 2008. It had a total length of 32.6 cm, a fork length of 28.9 cm, and a standard length of 25.8 cm. It had a total weight of 454 grams. The fish has small sharp pointed teeth in both jaws. These fish can exhibit a golden, a slightly pink or a slightly orange or a steely colour. They usually have a black blotch at the origin of the lateral line but sometimes, especially if scales are missing in this area, the blotch can be faint. They always have a bright orange mouth and tongue and the inside of the gill cover is bright orange also. The orange buccal cavity is a good feature to separate this bream or porgy from the common or Couch's sea bream, Pagrus pagrus, and the pandora, Pagellus erythrinus, which may be found in the English Channel. sealord > This juvenile corkwing wrasse, Crenilabrus melops, or Symphodus (Crenilabrus) melops, was caught with a dip net in a tuft of serrated wrack, Fucus serratus, which was growing out of the sandy bottomed channel leading to the Queen Elizabeth II marina, St. Peter Port harbour, Guernsey, Channel Islands, Great Britain. Many of the juvenile wrasse in this channel were parasitised by Anilocra sp. isopod crustaceans. These isopods dig into the skin of the fish behind and above the eye on one side of the head. sealord > A garfish, Belone belone, captured in Guernsey waters and bought from a local fish retailer for £1.00 on the 12 August 1995. The fish had a total weight of 380 grams. Guernsey recreational fishermen refer to these fish as 'long-nose'. This fish harbours some copepod skin parasites. One can be seen attached to the skin just behind the gill cover and another can be seen just infront of the eye on the lower jaw. Garfish possess pale green bones. They can be filleted but they are usually steaked. The steaks can be rolled in batter or breadcrumbs and fried. File No. 130895 12-30 ©RLLord fishinfo@guernsey.net
sealord > This boarfish, Capros aper, was brought to me by Guernsey commercial fisherman, Shane Petit, on 23 February 2002. Boarfish are rarely caught in Guernsey waters. There used to be an angling competition for them around St. Peter Port harbour in Guernsey every November but this no longer takes place.
