Marine life found in Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast. Guernsey is the second largest island in the Channel Islands located between England and France. sealord > In Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast I turned over a cobble (adjacent photograph) in a small pool left by the falling tide and found thirty-nine juvenile hermit crabs, Pagurus bernhardus, occupying mostly Gibbula umbilicalis (flat top shell) shells. One of the hermit crabs occupied a larger painted top shell, Calliostoma zizyphinum, shell. These hermit crabs are Europe's largest and most common hermit crab species. sealord > The cobble in the middle of the tide pool in Belle Greve Bay, Guernsey had a gathering of 39 small hermit crabs, Pagurus bernhardus, underneath it. Most of the hermit crabs occupied the shell of the flat top shell, Gibbula umbilicalis. One of the slightly larger hermit crabs occupied the shell of the painted top shell, Calliostoma zizyphinum. sealord > A female masked crab, Corystes cassivelaunus, dug up from the beach in Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast. A bait digger unearthed two masked crabs by locating holes in the sand where their antennae stuck out. Their antennae have setae (like hairs) on the inside of the antennae, which make a tube for the crab to breathe through while living in the sand. File No. BG 200207 6696 ©RLLord fishinfo@guernsey.net

sealord > The edible velvet swimming crab, known in Guernsey as the lady crab, Necora puber, is abundant on the Belle Greve Bay sea-shore. In January many of these crabs can be found under boulders in a soft-shell state. They have moulted recently. sealord > This well camouflaged juvenile female Liocarcinus arcuatus crab was found in the eel grass beds at extreme low water in Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast. R.W. Ingle in his book "British Crabs" gives this crab a common name of 'arch fronted swimming crab' but common names are not well established for many crab species. This individual has a carapace or shell width of 10.0 mm. This image was taken with a Canon S80 with an underwater housing. I have taken close-up film images too, which will be available soon.
