Guernsey insects and spiders : Although I have occasionally photographed insects over many years my interest in them is very recent. Photographing and learning about them offers a break from my main pursuit of photographing and identifying marine life. Entomologist Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Records Centre tells me that most insects cannot be identified from photographs alone. The same applies to many marine species. However Guernsey's insect fauna is more limited so some insect species can be identified in Guernsey as they may be the sole member of their family or genus found on our island. I have no knowledge of insects so some images only contain an image caption. The identifications that have been made have been provided by Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Records Centre. http://www.biologicalrecordscentre.gov.gg/

I find that photography is a great benefit for remembering what I have seen and where I have seen it. I hope to grow this gallery of images of insects so that it may help Guernsey residents and visitors identify the species they come across.

Gennep Insects : Insects photographed in and around the Dutch city of Gennep

Guernsey moths & butterflies : This gallery features moths and butterflies (order lepidoptera) I have photographed, mostly in 2008, in Guernsey, Channel Islands, British Isles. If the caption ends in 'smg' the identification I have made is tentative until confirmed by a lepidopteran specialist.

Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Record Centre ( http://www.biologicalrecordscentre.gov.gg/ ) and Richmond Austin (moth specialist) of La Societe Guernesiaise ( http://www.societe.org.gg/ ) have assisted me greatly in identifying many of the species I have photographed.
